What to Check Before Buying a Used Shipping Container

Buying a used shipping container without a checklist is how projects inherit slow leaks and doors that will not close after the first summer. You do not need to be a surveyor, but you do need a repeatable set of questions and photo angles — especially when purchasing remotely for a Dubai or UAE site.

Structure and corner castings

Start at the corners. Castings and corner posts take stacking and lifting loads. Deep corrosion, bent posts, or cracked welds are red flags. Walk the underside edges visually if accessible. A container can look acceptable from ten metres away and still hide structural fatigue near the base rail.

Roof and water path

Roofs collect patches. Some patches are professional; others are hopeful. Ask when patches were done and whether interior staining exists under them. Interior light tests (dark box, bright exterior) can reveal pinholes. In UAE storage use, a quiet drip becomes mouldy cardboard and ruined tools.

Doors, seals, and locking rods

Open and close both doors fully. Watch for droop, ground strike, and uneven gasket compression. Replaceable seals are normal maintenance; twisted door panels are a bigger conversation. Confirm cam and locking rod operation. If the box will sit in a dusty yard, tired seals age faster.

Floor condition

Marine plywood floors suffer delamination, oil saturation, and fastener lift. For storage of food-adjacent packaging or sensitive goods, floor odours and contamination matter. For contractor tools, solid support under pallet jacks matters more. Note any steel flooring inserts or repair plates.

Sidewalls and paint

Dents are common on used equipment. Distinguish cosmetic panel oil-canning from sharp creases near posts. Paint quality affects presentation and corrosion delay, not magic waterproofing. If you plan branding wraps or fresh paint, factor that cost into the “cheap used” calculation.

Grade language

Ask whether the unit is offered as cargo-worthy, wind-and-watertight, or as-is. Each phrase should mean something specific in the seller’s mouth. If the answer is fuzzy, slow down. TAT Containers prefers plain descriptions over inflated labels.

Delivery fit

A perfect container that cannot reach your pad is not a bargain. Confirm access before you fall in love with a particular serial number. Share gate width and ground photos when you request delivery.

Paper and identity

Note container numbers for your records. Certification relevance depends on whether the box will ever ship again. Static storage buyers still benefit from clear ownership and invoice trails.
